This previous client and their large family needed additional space for multiple gatherings. The requirements were for both sheltered and open air entertainment areas beyond what they had available inside the existing house. Both sitting and eating areas were achieved throughout the yard. A cozy covered outdoor fireplace area adjacent to the house’s kitchen complete with couches and a linear bar with barstools along the exterior wall of the house satisfy the desire for a sheltered outdoor environment. The yard then steps down to a large decomposed granite patio area with overhead café lighting to create an inviting al fresco eating area surrounded by planters with native plants, olive trees and a variety of citrus planted in ground and in pots.
A series of raised beds for herb and vegetable gardens which line the side entry to the backyard, were created to complement the family’s Mediterranean roots and commitment to healthy eating.
A raised fire pit with built in seating alongside a spa and small barbecue area was developed in another corner of the yard. Even a small horseshoe and bocce alley found space in an unused lane along the fence.
Every square inch of this family’s yard was used to maximize the outdoor living experience.
